Funding agencies often reward researchers with an impact across different fields.Traditional evaluation mechanisms penalize researchers with small scientific impact. Interdisciplinarity is found to increase citing fields and decrease overall citations.Researchers hence receive contrasting incentives towards interdisciplinarity. Research policy has to overcome this public vs. private interest trade-off.
